Steinway & Sons Model D – Concert Grand Piano
Steinway & Sons Model D Concert Grand Piano – Hamburg – Serial No. 395670 (1966)
We are pleased to offer this outstanding Steinway & Sons Model D concert grand piano, manufactured in Hamburg in 1966 and presented in very good original condition.
At 9 feet in length, the Model D is Steinway’s flagship concert instrument and the choice of the vast majority of the world’s leading concert pianists and concert halls. Renowned for its extraordinary tonal power, depth of colour, and responsive action, the Model D represents the pinnacle of the Steinway tradition.
This particular instrument, serial number 395670, was built at the Steinway & Sons Hamburg factory during a highly respected period of production. Hamburg Steinways are especially prized for their clarity, precision of action, and refined tonal character, combining great power with exceptional transparency across the musical range.
The piano retains what appears to be its original strings, hammers and action, and remains in very good original order. Instruments that have been well maintained and preserved in largely original condition from this era are increasingly sought after by pianists and collectors alike.
Tonally, the instrument offers the qualities expected of a fine Hamburg Model D: a powerful yet controlled bass, a rich and singing tenor register, and a clear, projecting treble capable of great brilliance while still allowing subtle tonal shading.
The piano is finished in classic ebony polish, presenting the timeless appearance associated with Steinway concert instruments worldwide.
Importantly, this piano was manufactured after the period sometimes associated with the “verdigris” string corrosion issue discussed in relation to certain earlier mid-century Steinway instruments.
For the professional pianist, recording studio, institution, or discerning private owner, this instrument represents a rare opportunity to acquire a classic Hamburg Steinway Model D from one of the most desirable vintage periods of Steinway production.
“The piano retains its original Hamburg soundboard, contributing to its distinctive tonal character.”
Inspection and playing are warmly welcomed at our showroom.
